FIVE TOP REASONS WHY DIETS FAIL
In NO Particular ORDER by the way........
Rules, rules and more rules
What is the first thing you tell yourself, or get told, when you are about to embark on a new diet. You work out what types of foods you aren't allowed to eat and place boundaries around your normal regime.
Generally, the majority of humans I know, including myself, don't enjoy when rules are imposed. Psychologically you are already in conflict with yourself because you keep thinking about all the things you can't have.
Dieting is completely results driven - Your new diet begins with a fixation in your head about what you want to look like or perhaps an item of clothing you want to be able to wear again. Although having a goal can be helpful and motivating, the problem is that you don't appreciate the journey along the way. You also become very hard on yourself until you get there even if you are looking good or better from losing weight in the process. This constant berating of yourself until you get there is not healthy for your mind. The GOAL should be to become healthier and losing weight is a result of that process.
We don't replace our usual reasons for eating - Functionality is not the only reason we eat food. We often eat socially, emotionally, celebratory and often from boredom. When we are dieting we rarely take these things into consideration and LIFE comes up when friends invite you out for a birthday or a work function comes up, what are you going to eat? So when you are sitting at home trying to avoid your outings boredom sets in the fridge becomes your friend. Unless we replace these eating habits with other things Dieting will always be a major struggle.
Dieting is regarded as punishment for eating badly - Society often places the concept of Bad or Good on our eating habits. "I'm trying to be good today", I hear it all the time so when you are dieting its more of a prison sentence for your life long criminal behaviour of poor eating habits. This mindset is not a healthy one going into a new eating plan. New and healthy eating should be regarded as a new education to empower yourself and make healthy choices for yourself which are life lasting.
Fear of the life after - The thought of not being on a diet can often be scarier then being on one because it might mean putting the weight back on again. What is the in between part called? Society is driven to support being on a diet or not because people complain that they can't stabilise there size unless they are dieting. Many times I hear people scared to go ON a diet because they always put more weight on when they come off. So this tells me we are doing something wrong in the dieting phase because we aren't learning how to keep it off in the process.
